Every public IP belongs to an ASN, and that ASN tells anti-bot systems who runs the network your traffic comes from. What an Autonomous System is

The internet is a network of networks. Each large network โ€” a telecom, an ISP, a hosting company โ€” is an Autonomous System that manages its own block of IP addresses and announces routes to the rest of the internet using BGP. The ASN is the number that identifies that system. When you look up an IP, you can see which ASN owns it, and therefore which organization operates the network it lives on.

So an ASN is not about a single address; it describes the whole network a group of addresses belongs to, and the reputation of that network attaches to every IP within it.

How detection systems use the ASN

Anti-bot and fraud services keep a classification of ASNs. They know which ASNs belong to consumer ISPs, which belong to mobile carriers, and which belong to cloud and hosting providers. When a request arrives, they look up the source IP's ASN and judge accordingly: a residential ISP ASN reads as a real household, a mobile carrier ASN reads as a phone, and a hosting ASN reads as a machine.

Why residential and mobile ASNs win

Where ASNs come from

ASNs are handed out by the regional internet registries โ€” organizations like ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, and AFRINIC โ€” that govern IP and ASN allocation for their parts of the world. An organization that runs a network large enough to connect to multiple providers gets an ASN and one or more blocks of IP addresses to announce. Because this registration is public, anyone can look up which ASN owns an IP and which organization owns that ASN.

That public, verifiable link is exactly what anti-bot systems lean on. They do not have to guess whether an IP is residential or hosted โ€” they can read the registry data and classify the ASN accordingly. It also means an ASN's reputation is durable: a hosting network cannot easily shed the "datacenter" label its ASN carries.

Checking the ASN of an IP
