Almost every proxy question eventually comes down to one decision: what kind of IP address should you route your traffic through? The four common answers — residential, mobile, ISP (static residential), and datacenter — are not just price tiers. They come from fundamentally different places on the internet, and target websites treat them very differently. Choosing correctly is the single biggest lever you have for success rate and cost.

Datacenter proxies
Datacenter proxies live in commercial hosting facilities. They are fast, cheap, and available in near-unlimited quantities. The catch is that their IP ranges are registered to hosting companies, and anti-bot systems know those ranges. A datacenter IP announces, in effect, that it belongs to a server rather than a person.
That makes datacenter proxies excellent for targets that do not scrutinize IP reputation — internal tools, price checks on lenient sites, API endpoints, SEO rank tracking, or high-volume scraping where the occasional block is acceptable. They are the wrong tool for sites with sophisticated fraud detection.
Residential proxies
Residential proxies route through real consumer devices on real home internet connections. To a target site, the request looks like it is coming from an ordinary household. That trust is what you are paying for, and it is why residential IPs succeed on targets that reject datacenter traffic outright.
Residential pools are typically large and rotating, so you can present many different IPs across a session. The trade-offs are higher cost — usually billed per gigabyte of traffic — and slightly higher latency than datacenter. Use residential when you need to look like a genuine visitor: e-commerce, sneaker and ticketing sites, ad verification, and scraping of well-defended targets.
Mobile proxies
Mobile proxies route through cellular networks (4G/5G). They are the most trusted IP type of all, for a structural reason: carriers assign a small number of IP addresses to a large number of subscribers using carrier-grade NAT. Thousands of real users may share one mobile IP at once, so sites are extremely reluctant to block it — doing so would lock out many legitimate people.
This makes mobile proxies the strongest choice for the hardest targets: social media platforms, app-based services, and account management where bans are aggressive. The downsides are the highest cost of the four types and, often, lower raw throughput. Reserve mobile for cases where nothing else survives.
ISP (static residential) proxies
ISP proxies are a hybrid. The IP addresses are registered to consumer internet service providers — so they carry residential-level trust — but they are hosted on servers in a datacenter, which gives them datacenter-level speed and stability. Crucially, they are static: you keep the same IP for as long as you hold the proxy, rather than rotating.
That combination is ideal when you need a stable, trusted identity over time: managing a long-lived account, running a persistent session, or any workflow where changing IPs mid-session would itself look suspicious. You get the reliability of a dedicated server IP with the reputation of a home connection.
A quick decision framework
- Is the target lenient about IP reputation, or is cost/volume your main concern? Use datacenter.
- Do you need to look like a genuine, rotating consumer on a well-defended site? Use residential.
- Are you managing accounts on the toughest platforms where bans are aggressive? Use mobile.
- Do you need one stable, trusted IP held over time for a persistent session or account? Use ISP.
Match the tool to the target
There is no universally best proxy type — only the best fit for a specific target and workflow. A smart setup often mixes types: datacenter for cheap bulk work, residential for defended targets, ISP for stable account identities, and mobile for the few platforms that demand it.
Start by testing against your actual target with the cheapest type that has a realistic chance of working, then step up only if you see blocks. That keeps costs down while still getting the job done.
